Hi Des. We have just planted our first vege patch which consists of 4 no dig beds. We used sleepers with soil and mushroom compost. I'd suggest that you put in a decent watering system such as drip line and buy a timer so that you don't always have to be chasing water.
If you can, propogate your own seeds so that you can stagger planting times and therefore not have a glut of any one vegetable. Diggers in Dromana (vic) have a great garden you can visit and buy seeds, seedlings, plants, books etc. Their website is pretty good too. Think about companion planting and putting in flowers to attract insects and confuse pests. Crop rotation is also important as it decreases the risk of disease in the future. There are heaps of websites which deal with all that sort of stuff. If you want to be organic check out books and websites on permaculture. There is a book by Linda Woodrow which talks about the permaculture home garden. It's a pretty grand idea but lots of what she says makes good sense and the best thing is its Australian. I also started a journal where I note down things which I think I should have done differently or even things which worked well.
My best tip for the home gardener is follow the recommendations they give for distances between plants and seeds when planting as it will pay off in the long run. Hope this helps. Enjoy. There is absolutely nothing better than picking your first home grown vegetable. |

Thanks so much Anita for your advice & tips. What have you planted?
To my suprize i have got pumpkins & tomatoes growing from self sown seeds that were in my homemade compost i spread in a garden bed as i could't get anything to grow near the lemon tree. it will be a surprize to what pumpkins & tomatoes i get, as we use all sorts here. Have thinned out the tomatoes & the pumpkins plants are growing well.
Yes researching to see if it's going to save money growing more...dont want to invest in it & dont get more out of it. |
